2026 BECE: Education & Sports Committee Hails Orderly, Incident-Free Examination in Accra Metropolis

The Accra Metropolis recorded a peaceful and incident-free 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), according to an official performance review released by the local Education and Sports Committee.

The report, signed by Committee Chairman Hon. Theophilus Isaac Quaye, confirmed that all standard examination protocols were strictly observed across the metropolis with zero major disruptions or security breaches.

“The collaboration among supervisors, invigilators, school heads, and monitoring teams contributed significantly to the smooth running of the whole exercise,” Quaye stated, commending the inter-agency coordination.

Logistical Infrastructure

To manage the student population, authorities deployed a network of 26 designated examination centres throughout the capital.

Security and distribution operations for the examination papers were centralized at two secure depots: the Sacred Heart Technical Institute and Accra Academy Senior High School.

Enrollment and Gender Breakdown

A total of 5,361 candidates registered for the 2026 terminal exams, representing 141 participating schools.

Official data highlights a significant gender gap among this year’s candidates, with female registration outnumbering males by over 1,000 students. The statistical breakdown includes:

• Total Registered: 5,361 candidates

• Female Candidates: 3,216

• Male Candidates: 2,145

The report also revealed that while private schools accounted for the highest number of participating institutions, public schools fielded the vast majority of candidates. A total of 3,510 students drawn from 52 public schools sat for the exams, compared to 1,851 students coming from 89 private institutions.

Attendance and Enforcement

The committee reported an exceptionally high attendance rate, with only nine candidates recorded as absent throughout the entire examination window. Notably, the committee confirmed there were zero recorded cases of candidate pregnancy during the period.

To enforce institutional integrity and prevent examination malpractice, a heavy regulatory task force was deployed across the 26 centres. The personnel breakdown featured 26 supervisors, 16 assistant supervisors, and 240 invigilators.

Hon. Theophilus Isaac Quaye, who also serves as the Chorkor Assembly Member, Sub-Metro Chairman, and Ablekuma South Youth Organizer, indicated that the structural success of this year’s deployment will serve as a framework for managing future public examinations in the metropolis.
