McDan Foundation Supports Over 5,000 Widows with Massive Donation in Accra

The McDan Foundation provided essential supplies, financial aid, and critical healthcare services to more than 5,000 widows from the coastal belt of Accra during its annual “McDan Time with the Widows” event at the La Town Park.

The initiative targeted widows from Ga Mashie, Osu, La, and Teshie, seeking to alleviate economic hardships through a comprehensive social intervention program.

The La Town Park was transformed into a hub of hope as beneficiaries received a wide range of essential items. To assist the women through the annual event, the Foundation distributed large bags of rice, cooking oil, and beverages, alongside boxes of specially packaged Gari Mix. In addition to food staples, the widows were provided with high-quality clothing and direct cash donations to help meet immediate household expenses. The day began with a nutritious breakfast served to all attendees to set a dignified tone for the proceedings.

Addressing the barriers to quality medical care for the elderly, the Foundation partnered with the 37 Military Hospital to provide on-site clinical services. A team of over 40 health professionals, including 11 specialized doctors from the Ghana Armed Forces, conducted comprehensive screenings.

The medical outreach included:

Dental Care: Oral health consultations and cleanings.

Eye Care: Screenings for cataracts and vision impairment.

ENT Services: Specialized treatments for ear, nose, and throat issues.

General Health: Monitoring of blood pressure, sugar levels, and other vital signs.

Mr. Daniel McKorley, Chairman of the McDan Group, emphasized that these screenings are part of a periodic commitment to monitoring the health of the elderly rather than a one-off event.

During the ceremony, Mr. McKorley spoke on the necessity of supporting those who have lost spouses, noting that their challenges are often overlooked by society.

“God listens to widows, and as a society, we must also show them love, care, and support,” McKorley stated. He further revealed ambitions to expand the program nationwide, building on the momentum of previous years where the foundation supported upwards of 7,000 individuals.

This year’s event also featured a significant international collaboration with the RIDNE Food Consortium, a Ukrainian-based organization. The partnership brought high-ranking Ukrainian dignitaries to Accra, including Mr. Denys Bashlyk, Deputy Minister of Economy, Environment, and Agriculture of Ukraine, and Mr. Oleksii Khvorostianyi, CEO of RIDNE, signaling a global front in philanthropic solidarity.

The intervention was met with profound gratitude from the beneficiaries. One widow from the La community remarked that the combination of food, cash, and medical check-ups would “significantly ease the burden” on her family in the months ahead.

As the event concluded, Mr. McKorley reaffirmed his “unflinching support” for the widow community and issued a call to action for other corporate entities and wealthy individuals to establish similar traditions of giving to ensure no member of society is left behind.
