NKWATIA PRESBY SHS SET TO CELEBRATE 60 YEARS: OLD STUDENTS HOMECOMING NEXT WEEK

The Nkwatia Presby SHS Old Students Association (NOSA) has announced plans for a week-long 60th anniversary and homecoming programme, scheduled for November 24–30, with the main celebration set for Saturday, November 29.

NOSA President Daniel Owusu Asumadu (Zigor) said the association formally launched preparations on May 22 at the GNAT Hall in Accra. Preliminary activities already held include a health walk, meetings with year-badge groups and fundraising for the Nkwatia Senior High School National Science and Maths Quiz team.

Asumadu said the alumni hope to invite President John Dramani Mahama and the Minister of Education to the anniversary events. He identified several pressing needs at the school, calling particularly for staff accommodation, a modern library and an ICT laboratory. “About 95% of the teachers live outside the school,” he said, warning that the absence of teachers during off-hours can encourage indiscipline and immoral behaviour among students.

The 1993 year group has already provided an eight‑bed infirmary for the school, Asumadu noted, and he urged its proper maintenance. Central organising committee chairman Kwame Amo said NOSA has also been active on campus this year with planting of trees and conducting social outreach,  and outlined a programme of pre‑anniversary activities including mentorship sessions, health screening, clean‑up exercises, fun games, debates, a science quiz and visits to local traditional events.

Headmistress Gloria Baafi thanked alumni for recent donations, saying the 1995 year group installed 40 streetlights, while the 1989 and 1981 groups donated bulbs and sports equipment. She echoed the call for staff housing and additional facilities, saying inadequate accommodation limits teachers’ presence on campus and hampers discipline and student protection. Baafi added that the school’s near‑2,000 student population urgently needs an additional girls’ dormitory and classroom block; “Some of them are sleeping on the floor,” she said, stressing that improved infrastructure would boost enrolment and student performance.

Programme highlights for November 24–30

• Tuesday, November 25: Clean‑up exercise (9:00am–12:00noon); literary night in the evening.
