New Ghana Tourism Development Company CEO reflects on first week in office

The newly appointed Acting Chief Executive Officer(CEO) of the Ghana Tourism Development Company (GTDC), Prof. Kobby Mensah, has shared reflections on his first week in office, marking a significant milestone in his leadership journey.In a post outlining his initial actions, Prof. Mensah expressed gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for entrusting him with the role, acknowledging the responsibility to support the national vision of building a better Ghana. He also made it a priority to inform key stakeholders about his appointment, starting with his university authorities, family and close friends.The new CEO began his tenure by reaching out to key figures in the sector, including the Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie. In their first official meeting, Prof. Mensah emphasized his unwavering commitment to the minister’s goals and the President’s broader vision for the country.Prof. Mensah also made time for an important and informal meeting with his predecessor, Mr. Kwadwo Odame Antwi, who took the time to guide him through the operations of GTDC.The former CEO introduced Prof. Mensah to the staff, setting the stage for a formal handover ceremony that took place the following Monday.The first week saw multiple engagements with various stakeholders, including key players in tourism programme development and collaborations, as well as the incoming and outgoing CEOs of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA).These interactions provided valuable insights into the relationship between GTDC and GTA, a crucial aspect of the tourism sector.On his second day in office, Prof. Mensah hosted a meeting with the sector minister, who visited the agencies, including GTDC. The session was filled with optimism, as the minister shared her vision for the future, emphasizing the alignment needed to meet the goals of the government and deliver on the mandate given by Ghanaians.Prof. Mensah also held a productive session with his Marketing Communications team, introducing the concept of “Brand Journalism,” which they are now eager to implement as part of the new marketing strategy for GTDC.On his third day, the management team engaged in a brainstorming session focused on product development. The discussions centered on GTDC’s mandate, the importance of investing in tourism infrastructure, and the company’s role as the commercial arm of the Ministry of Tourism.Following these deliberations, the team outlined four key areas of focus: infrastructure, human capital, technology and innovation, and sustainable cultural assets.Summing up his first week, Prof. Mensah expressed confidence in the team’s readiness to hit the ground running, fully committed to the President’s vision of a revitalized Ghana. “So far so good,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of rapid progress in the pursuit of a better future for the country.In a lighter note, he shared the personal challenge of answering over 2800 WhatsApp messages within three days of his announcement, expressing his gratitude to his supportive networks, including Tanko Musah, Eugene Allotey and Chris Atadika.
