The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, has reaffirmed his commitment to building a progressive and inclusive Parliament that strengthens good governance and reflects the aspirations of Ghanaians, in line with the 1992 Constitution.
Speaking at the Speaker’s Editors Forum in Accra on Tuesday, Mr Bagbin outlined his vision of a legislature that is open, transparent, and responsive to the needs of the people.
He noted that certain parliamentary committees relating to government operations were deliberately assigned to opposition Members of Parliament to chair—a move he described as a “creative innovation” designed to promote balance, accountability, and bipartisan oversight.
The Speaker also disclosed plans to introduce a Parliamentary Transition Act, similar to the Presidential Transition Act, ahead of the 2028 General Elections. The proposed legislation will ensure a smooth and structured transition of the legislature after every electoral cycle.
Mr. Bagbin expressed concern that many staff who served under his predecessor, Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye, had left office without proper handover documentation, leaving gaps in institutional continuity.
Meanwhile, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, MP for Bawku Central, revealed that discussions are ongoing to encourage more public hearings and greater media engagement in committee proceedings.
On his part, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, MP for Effutu, commended the Speaker’s initiative, describing it as a step toward enhancing transparency, collaboration, and informed public discourse while safeguarding the integrity and dignity of Parliament.
