The Public Relations Coordinating Division (PRCD) of the Information Services Department (ISD), in collaboration with GroundGrid Strategic Communications Consultancy, organized a two-day training session on Strategic Leadership and Executive Development for its Public Relations Officers (PROs)across the various Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDAs) from Wednesday 26 to Friday 28 November 2025 at Aqua Safari Resort in Ada.
The training was aimed at sharpening the leadership competencies, enhancing technical skills, and realigningcommunication strategies among the PROs to deliver timely, professional and citizen-centered public communication.
Delivering the opening remarks, Rev. Charlotte Hanson, Head of the Public Relations Coordinating Division(PRCD), disclosed that the training was anchored on her outfit’s determination to improve and ensure effective government communications strategy, enhance the leadership skills of its PR practitioners and improve their capacity not to only communicate effectively but also lead effectively.
According to Rev Hanson, “In today’s rapidly evolving information environment, the role of the PRO has become more strategic than ever”, saying our citizens demand clarity , accuracy, responsiveness and transparency. She added that “As PROs, we are the bridge between government and the public and our work shapes trust, informs national discourse and ultimately supports the success of government programs and policies.”
She encouraged participants to approach the training with openness, curiosity, and a readiness to transform their practice, with the goal of communicating for national development.
The Acting Director of the Information Services Department, Dr. Winnifred N. Mahama, highlighted the importance of practical experience over mere technical knowledge in public relations. She noted that while acquiring knowledge is valuable, the true measure of an effective PR professional lies in the ability to apply that knowledge with experience and practicality.
Among the key issues discussed were the formation of the ISD Government Communications Association. It emerged that the legal review of the association’s documents is ongoing and that the committee responsible will propose end-of-year activities, and that elections for executive positions are scheduled to take place once registration is complete.
The Lead Consultant for GroundGrid Strategic Communications Consultancy, Mr. Joseph Narnor speaking on executive mindset and reset, emphasized the importance of PR professionals seeing themselves as strategic partners within their organizations.
He urged PR professionals to be more than just visible, but to also add value to their organizations. “As PR professionals, you should be seen as essential partners who drive success and growth,” he noted. “You should be able to say something, add something to the conversation, and make a meaningful impact.”
The consultant’s remarks were part of his presentation on mindset and strategic positioning, where he explored how PR professionals can position themselves strategically within their organizations. He encouraged attendees to rethink their approach to their roles and to see themselves as key players in driving organizational success.
Participants were taken through specialized modules, including Strategic Positioning, Executive Mindset, Development of Concept papers and Career management among others.
Following the training, some Public Relations Officers expressed gratitude and confidence that the program had been a valuable learning experience. “This training has been an eye-opener for me,” said a participant. “It has helped me to rethink my approach to communication and to see myself as a strategic partner in my organization. I’m confident that the skills and knowledge I’ve gained will help me to make a greater impact and contribute to the success of my organization.”
Others echoed similar sentiments, praising the training’s focus on practical skills and strategic thinking, and expressing enthusiasm to apply their newfound knowledge to drive results in their roles.
Fun-filled activities were also designed to equip participants with skills such as teamwork, communication, and leadership, which were essential for effective Public Relations Practitioners as it was not all work and no play for the PROs. They had the opportunity to participate in activities such as outdoor games, sports, and group competitions that fostered teamwork. These team-building activities helped the Officers to bond and connect with each other on a personal level.
The karaoke nights and beach bonfire were also a great way to unwind and relax and will be memories we’ll cherish long after the training”, says a participant.
Rev. Hanson, in her closing remarks, expressed gratitude to the facilitators and participants for their active and insightful contributions. In total, about forty-one PROs attended the training and actively participated in the programme.
