The President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Ben Nunoo Mensah, has officially announced that he will not seek re-election in the upcoming GOC elections scheduled for April 2025.
In a press release dated March 26, 2025, Nunoo Mensah expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve but stated that he believes it is time to step aside and allow others to continue the progress of Ghanaian sports.
“While it would have been an honor to continue serving my nation and the sports community in this capacity, there is a greater call to serve humanity in a different and equally fulfilling way. I accordingly want to move on and will not contest in the upcoming GOC elections,” he said.
The announcement may come as a disappointment to many in the sports fraternity, as several individuals and federations had encouraged him to seek a final four-year term. However, he expressed his appreciation for their confidence and trust in his leadership.
Reflecting on his tenure, Nunoo Mensah highlighted key achievements, including:
Securing an additional six acres of land at Amasaman for a Community Sports Centre and football academies.
Renaming the GOC headquarters as “Olympic House”, along with its refurbishment.
Providing consistent financial support to national sports federations and athletes.
Expanding capacity-building and travel opportunities for sports administrators and media professionals.
Leading Ghana to its first Olympic medal in 30 years at the Tokyo 2020 Games.
He emphasized the need for new leadership to build on the foundation laid during his administration, urging the sports fraternity to continue working towards greater achievements.
“I believe this is the right time to step aside so that others can continue our progress,” he stated, adding that he is grateful to all stakeholders who have supported his journey.
Nunoo Mensah concluded by extending his heartfelt appreciation to past Presidents, Ministers, the National Sports Authority, GOC Board members, sponsors, the media, and sports enthusiasts who contributed to the successes recorded under his leadership.
The GOC elections in April are expected to usher in a new era of leadership for Ghana’s Olympic movement.
