West African Gas Pipeline Resumes Operations After Successful Maintenance

The West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo) has successfully completed critical pipeline maintenance activities, resuming natural gas transportation from Nigeria to Ghana, Togo, and Benin.

The four-week maintenance project involved offshore pipeline cleaning and inspection, subsea valve replacements, and other essential works across multiple locations. Gas supply to Tema, Cotonou, and Lomé was temporarily shut down to facilitate the works.

WAPCo’s Managing Director, Michelle Burkett, praised the technical teams and stakeholders for their dedication in completing the project efficiently and safely. “I want to congratulate every member of our team for their dedication and professionalism. This was a complex project, and your hard work, even in the face of challenges, made it a success,” she said.

The Director General of the West African Gas Pipeline Authority (WAGPA), Chafari Kanya Hanawa, also commended the team for completing the project ahead of schedule.

The successful completion of the maintenance works guarantees the continued safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP). WAPCo reaffirmed its commitment to providing high-quality energy services while upholding the highest safety standards in the sub-region.

The resumption of gas transportation is expected to boost power generation in Ghana and improve the energy supply to key industries and households.

The maintenance project was carried out in collaboration with the governments of Ghana, Nigeria, Togo, and Benin, as well as maritime and regulatory authorities, customers, shippers, gas off-takers, host communities, and shareholders.
