Scammers targeting Mobile Money users are becoming increasingly sophisticated as many of their previous schemes have become widely recognised. I recently fell victim to one of these new tactics and wish to share my experience to help others avoid the same fate.
The Setup: “Bargain Bundle” Data OffersA buzz has emerged around a “bargain bundle” promotion for data plans from MTN, Airtel, and Telecel. Numerous agents are promoting this offer online, claiming discounted data packages in exchange for upfront payments. While some agents are legitimate—particularly those you may know—numerous fraudsters are impersonating agents to deceive unsuspecting individuals.
I encountered someone on TikTok advertising this bargain bundle. After a brief conversation, he requested that I send money first. Despite my reservations, I proceeded. He assured me that activation would take only five minutes, but then I received no further updates.
The Scam Unfolds: The Deceptive CodeThe scammer instructed me to dial a code linked to a service called “Nagrat.” This service prompted me for a staff ID, which I did not possess. He then claimed that MTN would send me a six-digit code, which I was to combine with my MoMo PIN to create a ten-digit code. He insisted that this step was essential for activating the bundle.
At that point, I should have recognised the red flags, but I complied with his instructions.
The Aftermath: Funds DisappearEventually, he informed me that my staff ID was incorrect and requested additional information before disappearing altogether. Moments later, I noticed a significant amount missing from my MoMo wallet.
I immediately contacted MTN, who confirmed that I had been scammed. The six-digit code was actually my MyMTN login code. By merging it with my MoMo PIN, the fraudster gained unrestricted access to my account.
Learn from My Experience:
• Never share verification codes with anyone.
• Never disclose your MoMo PIN—regardless of the circumstances.
• If you have any doubts, always reach out to MTN customer service (100) or visit an official office for verification.
• Take a moment to think before following any unusual instructions.
Despite SIM card registration being linked to your identity, fraud continues to occur. Remain vigilant!
