RMU hosts Laud Okantey Memorial Lecture to champion Blue Economy for Ghana’s development, 24-Hour economy vision

The Regional Maritime University (RMU) as part of efforts to promote the Blue Economy as a driver of socio-economic development of Ghana, held the Laud Okantey Annual Memorial Blue Economy Public Lecture in Accra.

The event which brought together distinguished stakeholders from the government, industry and academia was also in honour the legacy of a visionary maritime professional, Mr Laud Okantey, who passed on recently.

Held under the theme “The Blue Economy: How Can Ghana Benefit for National Development and Job Creation within the Context of a 24-Hour Economy,” the lecture served as call to action, exploring how Ghana could leverage its maritime resources for sustainable development.

In his welcome address, the University Registrar Dr Baboucarr Njie, acting on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, stressed that the lecture was more than a ceremonial occasion, but a platform for critical reflection and strategic dialogue. 

He highlighted RMU’s central role in championing the Blue Economy through maritime education, research, and innovation.

“The ocean is not merely a resource for exploitation but a shared heritage that demands responsible stewardship.” he stated. 

He urged stakeholders to embrace opportunities for collaboration and innovation to ensure a thriving and sustainable maritime future.

Representing the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Madam Emelia Arthur, Mr Fred Kwasi Antwi-Boadu, Coordinator of the Blue Economy Secretariat, commended the organisers. 

He noted that the event aligned with the government’s vision of a 24-hour economy that fosters continuous productivity, innovation, and inclusive employment. 

He further emphasised the government’s commitment to sustainable fisheries management and called on RMU to take the lead in training professionals, advancing maritime technology and generating data-driven policies.

On behalf of the Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Godwin Livinus Bessing, Commodore Ben Baba Abdul delivered remarks on the strategic importance of the Blue Economy. 

He stated that a well-developed maritime sector would not only enhance environmental sustainability but also drive national security, economic growth, and job creation.

The event also featured a stimulating panel discussion led by Dr Gabriel Akakpo, Dean of the School of Graduate Studies. 

The session had experts from government, academia and industry, who shared insights on unlocking the full potential of Ghana’s maritime sector.

Dr Robert Nyemah, Head of Research and Innovation at RMU, also reiterated the need to sustain the event, emphasising its role in shaping socio-economic growth both locally and regionally.

There was also a moving tribute to the late Mr Okantey, read by family member Mr. Eric K. Ntow, accompanied by a poignant flute rendition of traditional dirges.

As a gesture of appreciation and commitment to the continued legacy of Mr Laud Okantey, the RMU presented a citation to his family, symbolising the birth of an enduring partnership for the annual lecture series.
