The President John Dramani Mahama has issued a challenge to the young people in his government to prove their worth and justify their inclusion in key positions.
Speaking at the launch of the African Political Parties Network (APPI) in Accra on Friday, he emphasized that their appointments as ministers and chief executives of state-owned enterprises were a test of how ready the youth are to assume leadership roles.
President Mahama stated that the future of Africa lies in the hands of its youth, and those in his government must not disappoint. He pointed out that he has assembled one of the youngest governments in Ghana’s history and that those given such opportunities must be exemplary ambassadors.
In his view, the performance of this youthful government would pave the way for more opportunities for young people in future administrations.
With 60% of Africa’s population under 25, he stressed that the youth must be included at the decision-making table, stating, “The future of Africa will be determined by how the youth are engaged in governance and decision-making.”
He also highlighted that while political awareness in Africa has grown, governance itself has not been strengthened. Political parties often focus on short-term electoral cycles rather than fostering long-term visions.
The President argued that political parties should not be driven solely by the desire for electoral victories, but should work toward building sustainable systems that prioritize effective governance.
The APPI, an initiative of the Africa Governance Centre, was launched with the theme ‘Fostering Inter-party Cooperation and Effective Governance for Africa’s Economic Transformation.’
The network aims to foster cooperation, strengthen democratic governance, and advance policy innovation among political parties across the continent. It is expected to operate in all African countries.
