Hon Engr Kwabena Agyei Agyepong (former Npp National General Secretary)
The proposal to expand the party’s electoral college is progeny of Kwabena Agyei Agyepong. He “Gave Life To Dry Bones ” is a potent metaphor. It speaks to a feeling of being used and discarded, a common sentiment among Npp party foot soldiers and former officials who work tirelessly and made good contributions to the welfare of the party, but feel sidelined afterwards. It’s only a diehard party man and selfless being like Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, who can be thoughtful of the neglect and abandoned by our party.
The rationale behind his great proposal is to bring back sense of belonging, relevancy and inclusion for all stakeholders involved in the party’s progress. The proposal directly addresses this by formally integrating experienced members back into the party’s decision-making core. It tells them, “Your past service is valued, and your ongoing wisdom is needed.”. if indeed, because of Kwabena Agyepong proposal’s your political right or pride is restored, then reciprocate with very vote he giving you for he thinks of you, as he thinks of himself.
This is the most concrete change by Npp part in many years. By granting voting rights to a broader base of former officials (at all levels), the party moves away from a smaller, potentially more easily influenced group of delegates. This is often referred to as “broadening the delegate base,” or expansion of the electoral college. For example, all former pulling agents, constituency, regional and nation executives should all be given a voting right. And that includes former ministers, and DCEs for their invaluable experience. This reform ensures that their knowledge is not lost but leveraged when choosing the party’s leader, and potentially leading to more seasoned and electable candidates.
Another potential impact of such a proposal will be preventing factionalism and discontent. By giving a voice to past leaders, the party reduces the risk of them forming disgruntled factions that could work against the party’s interest. That’s not all, also, rewarding long service for years of dedication, incentivizing long-term commitment from current officials.
If the proposal is properly implemented, it would be a significant democratic reform within the party, aiming to choosing a more electable candidates. But the argument is that a larger, more experienced body of delegates is less likely to be swayed by short-term factors and more likely to select a flagbearer with broad appeal to the wider Ghanaian electorate, not just the party base. It will transform the party from a vehicle that is used every four years into a continuous, inclusive enterprise, which will strengthens the party’s institutional structure by creating a formal role for its elders and leveraging experience.
I think saying “Thank You ” to Hon Kwabena Agyei Agyepong for such a great proposal isn’t enough or his thoughtfulness to make alive members who were once irrelevant or his perspective on an important internal party development. What is essential is ensuring that a personality, political character and mind like Hon Engr Kwabena Agyei Agyepong becomes the flagbearer.
