The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is staging a protest in Accra today, September 23 to express strong opposition to what it describes as the “misapplication of justice” by the John Mahama-led government.
The party accuses the administration of weaponising state institutions to carry out politically motivated arrests and prosecutions targeting former NPP officials and sympathisers.
Confirming the protest, the NPP’s National Youth Organiser, Salam Mustapha, said the necessary arrangements had been made with the police in accordance with the Public Order Act.
“According to the Public Order Act, we were required to notify the police five days in advance, which we did. They also invited us to agree on the protest routes and other logistical details. Everything has been finalised,” Mustapha told Citi News on Monday.
The demonstration comes in the wake of high-profile arrests involving senior NPP figures. Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi and the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the party, was recently detained by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). Another regional chairman, Kwame Baffoe, also known as Abronye DC, was picked up by the police under similar circumstances.
The NPP claims that several other party members and sympathisers have also been arrested in what it believes are investigations driven by political motives rather than due process.
Party leaders say today’s protest aims to draw public attention to what they call the “selective application of justice” under the current government and to demand equitable treatment of opposition figures by state institutions.
