No to ECG Privatization: President Mahama Pledges Public-Private Partnerships for Power Sector Reform

President John Dramani Mahama has ruled out the privatization of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), instead promising to use public-private partnerships to improve electricity distribution. Speaking at the 2025 May Day celebrations in Accra, President Mahama sought to calm public fears over potential ECG privatization.

“Let me assure you that it is not my intention to privatize ECG as an institution,” he stated. “Our attention is more on a public-private collaboration to inject efficiency into our downstream electricity distribution system.”

The President attributed ECG’s financial struggles to poor governance and mismanagement over the past eight years, resulting in a debt of GH¢68 billion. He emphasized the need for drastic action to prevent the power sector’s collapse.

President Mahama cited a successful example of public-private partnership from his previous administration, involving Enclave Power Company in the Free Zones enclave. He believes this model can be replicated to improve ECG’s efficiency without privatizing it.

“I am sure that we can make our electricity distribution more effective through public-private partnerships, but I can assure you that electricity as an institution will not be privatized,” he emphasized.
