Nkwatia Presbyterian Senior High School, affectionately known as Nkwasco, is set for a major upgrade, following an official announcement by the Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu.
Speaking as the Special Guest of Honour at the school’s 60th anniversary celebration over the weekend, the Minister declared the government’s intention to elevate the school’s status, a move that is expected to significantly boost its infrastructure and academic profile.
“I am happy to announce that in honour of the 60th anniversary celebration of Nkwasco, I’ll do everything possible in my power to elevate Nkwasco to a Category A School with additional facilities,” Minister Iddrisu stated to an enthusiastic crowd of students, staff, and alumni.
The Minister did not only focus on Nkwasco but also used the platform to outline the government’s broader, ambitious plan to tackle the issue of school categorization and infrastructure financing nationwide.
The funding for this extensive elevation program is sourced from the 2026 budget, a commitment reaffirmed by President Mahama.
“In the 2026 budget, President Mahama, through the honourable minister for finance, announced that GHS 1.1 Billion will be invested in education infrastructure,” Hon. Haruna Iddrisu revealed. “This massive investment is specifically earmarked to facilitate the conversion of 30 Category C schools to B and 10 Category B schools to A.”
This significant national educational drive will also include expanding infrastructure in existing Category A schools. Complementing the domestic funding, the Minister confirmed crucial international support: “This program will be supported by a $200 Million injection from the World Bank,” he added.
Category ‘A’ status typically signifies the highest level of recognition for Senior High Schools in the country, often associated with superior facilities, improved staffing, and increased prestige, making the school a top choice for Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) graduates. The promise of “additional facilities” suggests that Nkwasco will soon see new dormitories, classrooms, or science laboratories to meet the required standard.
The school’s Board, NOSA Global President and Headmistress expressed profound gratitude, emphasizing that the elevation will be a fitting tribute to the school’s six decades of academic excellence and its contribution to national development.
