The National Democratic Congress (NDC) says it is fully prepared for the upcoming by-election in the Tamale Central constituency, scheduled for October 30, following the close of nominations for prospective parliamentary aspirants.
Speaking on Channel One Newsroom on Sunday, August 24, the party’s Deputy Director of Elections and IT, Rashid Tanko-Computer, confirmed that all internal processes are proceeding smoothly.
“We are prepared for the 30th October by-election in Tamale Central. Nominations have officially closed today for individuals interested in picking up forms,” he said.
Tanko-Computer outlined the next steps in the party’s timeline, stating that the NDC expects aspirants who have picked nomination forms to submit them formally by Thursday, August 28.
“We will now wait to see who among them returns their form by Thursday. That will give meaning to the earlier expression of interest,” he added.
Following the submission deadline, the party will conduct a vetting exercise on August 31 to assess the eligibility and commitment of all aspirants.
“The vetting process will focus on evaluating their capabilities, competencies, and whether they meet the requirements of both the NDC constitution and the national constitution,” he explained.
The by-election was triggered by a vacancy in the Tamale Central parliamentary seat. Political analysts anticipate a competitive contest, but the NDC remains confident in its chances of retaining the seat. Party officials say the internal processes are designed to ensure transparency and fairness ahead of the polls.
So far, two out of 14 initially interested individuals have withdrawn from the race, citing personal reasons and the high number of contestants. As a result, 12 aspirants are expected to submit nominations to contest in the NDC’s primary for the by-election.
