National Sports Authority Forms Interim Committee to Reform Ghana Boxing

The National Sports Authority (NSA) has established a Ghana Boxing Interim Management Committee (IMC) to oversee the reformation of Ghana boxing. This move comes in the wake of the tragic death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju, which occurred on March 29, 2025.

The IMC is chaired by Samir Captan, with Azumah Nelson, a boxing legend, serving as Vice Chairman and Special Technical Advisor. Other members of the committee include Brig. Gen. (Rtd) I. B. Quartey, a veteran boxing administrator; Felix Quartey Esq., a renowned lawyer with nearly four decades of service to the boxing fraternity; Dr. Hadi Mohammed Abdulah, a neurosurgeon at Korle-bu Teaching Hospital; Dr. Ofori Asare, a veteran boxing trainer and multi-title winning coach; and Mr. Lester Nii Amarh Kwantreng, a financial consultant, boxing promoter, and investor.

The committee will be supported by a coordinating team consisting of Mr. Patrick Johnson, the current GBA Secretary General, who will act as Secretary to the Committee; Mr. Gideon H. K. Oyiadzo, Projects & Branding Consultant and Organizing Secretary for Boxing Promoters Association of Ghana, who will serve as the Committee’s liaison and Coordinator; and Mr. Prince Azanu, National Anti-Doping Officer for the National Sports Authority (NSA), who will act as Stakeholder Liaison for Athlete Welfare and Technical Advisor on Anti-Doping Reform.

The terms of reference for the committee, as well as a comprehensive rollout plan and report of stakeholder engagements, have been provided to guide the committee’s work. The NSA has entrusted the committee with the responsibility of reforming Ghana boxing and ensuring the welfare and safety of boxers.

According to the Director General of the NSA, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, the committee’s formation is a significant step towards resetting Ghana boxing and restoring its reputation. The committee’s work is expected to have a positive impact on the sport, promoting fairness, transparency, and accountability.
