The lively Zongo communities in Kumasi were filled with joy and gratitude on Monday as renowned business figure and philanthropist Dr. Daniel McKorley, affectionately known as McDan, was celebrated alongside his Foundation for their significant contributions to education. A traditional mini durbar, organised by chiefs and elders from the various tribes within the Kumasi Zongo, recognised the foundation’s impactful scholarship programme.

The event served as a heartfelt tribute to the McDan Foundation’s steadfast dedication over the last four years, which has enabled numerous young individuals from the Zongo communities to pursue higher education across Ghana. Many beneficiaries, including graduates from the esteemed Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and other institutions, attended to express their gratitude to Dr. McKorley, who community leaders referred to as the “Messiah of the Zongo” for his transformative contributions.

“This durbar is more than just a ceremony; it embodies the sincere appreciation of a community witnessing its youth thrive through education,” remarked one of the presiding chiefs. “Dr. McKorley and his foundation have illuminated a path where darkness once prevailed. Our graduates here today are living testaments to the power of this support.”
Building on this legacy of achievement, the event also heralded a significant expansion of the initiative. Dr. McKorley personally welcomed ten new students from the Kumasi Zongo into the McDan Scholarship Scheme. These scholars will benefit from full funding for their studies at various tertiary institutions across the country.

In addressing the new recipients, Dr. McKorley underscored the responsibilities that accompany such opportunities. “This scholarship transcends mere financial support,” he stated. “It represents an investment in your potential and the future of your communities. We urge you to seize this opportunity, excel in your studies, and return as agents of change. Be the leaders, innovators, and problem-solvers that Zongo and Ghana require.”
With the induction of these ten new scholars, the total number of students currently supported by the McDan Scholarship Scheme has surpassed 300, encompassing universities and tertiary institutions nationwide. This expansive reach exemplifies the foundation’s commitment to dismantling financial obstacles to higher education for deserving yet underprivileged youth.

The event in the Zongo community powerfully illustrated the tangible impact of the McDan Foundation’s efforts. The presence of former graduates, the respect accorded by traditional leaders, and the hope ignited in the new scholars collectively painted a vivid picture of empowerment and community transformation driven by educational investment.
