McDan Affirms Commitment to Airport Land Investment Amid Legal Challenges

Renowned Ghanaian businessman McDan has reaffirmed his dedication to a crucial parcel of airport land in Accra, following a recent court decision that awarded the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) control of the property.

The High Court in Accra issued its ruling on 6 May, granting GACL full re-entry and possession of over 16 acres adjacent to Kotoka International Airport (KIA), which had been under the management of McDan Group subsidiaries, namely McDan Shipping Company and Airport Logistics Limited. GACL’s legal action was based on alleged violations of land lease agreements and unpaid ground rents amounting to $26,296.

In response, the McDan Group has sought a stay of execution and is actively pursuing an appeal, asserting that it has operated in good faith for nearly two decades.

The company points to its significant investments in the region, which include financing security patrols for over 12 years and constructing warehouses to deter encroachment. These initiatives, according to the company, were integral to safeguarding and developing the land.

For McDan, this legal battle transcends mere property disputes; it represents a defence of his legacy as a trailblazing investor who chose to enhance the area when others were reluctant. His approach involved collaborating directly with the traditional allodial owners from La, Teshie, and Nungua, rather than formalising title through the Lands Commission, reflecting his commitment to fostering strong community relationships.

Supporters of McDan contend that his efforts have not only protected the land but have also generated economic opportunities for local residents. They perceive the recent legal developments as a potential attempt to undermine these contributions.

The McDan Group insists it will explore all available legal avenues to safeguard its investments and ensure that its legacy in the region remains intact.
