Mahama Reports Significant Progress on 24-Hour Economy Initiative in First 120 Days

President John Mahama has revealed notable strides in the execution of his administration’s ambitious 24-hour economy initiative, fulfilling a pivotal campaign commitment within his initial 120 days in office.

“The rollout of the program has begun in earnest,” President Mahama stated. “We pledged to initiate the drafting of necessary legal amendments and prepare for implementation within the first 120 days—and we have honored that commitment.”

The President confirmed that the Cabinet has sanctioned essential amendments to both the Ghana Investment Promotion Center Act and the Labor Act.

“These amendments are designed to bolster social protection, create a supportive environment for the 24-hour economy initiative, and foster positive business and labor relations,” he elaborated.

Several government agencies have already shifted to round-the-clock operations with impressive outcomes. “The Ghana Investment Promotion Center has introduced 24-hour premium services to eliminate delays in processing for investors,” Mahama reported.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has initiated a 24-hour passport service, while the DVLA has extended its hours to address an 18-month backlog of licenses.”

The employment potential of this initiative is beginning to take shape. “The Youth Employment Agency is preparing to launch a corporate support program for graduates, which will connect them with firms operating 24 hours a day,” the President announced.

“This initiative aims to benefit 20,000 graduates.”

To support nighttime operations, security measures are being put in place. “Acknowledging the necessity for enhanced security, the police service is establishing a 24-hour police unit to improve night patrols and leverage technology,” President Mahama stated.

Energy incentives are also being developed to encourage participation in the initiative. “The Minister of Energy is in discussions with the PURC to implement smart metering with time-of-use tariffs, offering lower rates during off-peak hours,” the President revealed. “This provides a direct incentive for businesses engaged in the 24-hour economy initiative.”

The policy has already garnered significant interest from the private sector. “Numerous businesses are eager to align with this initiative,” Mahama noted. “We are exploring new pathways for job creation, expanding employment opportunities, especially for young graduates, and empowering the private sector as a vital engine for sustainable job growth.”

Looking to the future, the President emphasized: “This initiative is crafted to drive structural transformation throughout our economy, anchored on pillars aimed at revitalizing key sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism.”
