I will not cancel Free SHS – President Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated that the flagship policy of the previous government, Free Senior High School (Free SHS), will not be canceled.

Rather, he said its implementation would be improved to maximize its benefits.

Delivering his State of the Nation Address on Thursday, the President affirmed his commitment to quality education, ensuring that young people receive the right education and training to become self-sufficient.

“No new school will be built in Ghana without teachers’ accommodation,” he stated.

He emphasized that it was crucial to motivate teachers and improve their conditions of service to effectively impart knowledge to students.

To support this, he announced that a 20% allowance would be given to trained teachers who accept postings to rural areas.

He also revealed that Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education would be expanded to all schools.

Furthermore, he stated that the government scholarship scheme would be transparent, with the names of beneficiaries published annually.

“The intention is to ensure that it benefits everyone, not just a few,” he said.
