The Ministry of Foreign Affairs officially launched Ghana’s new chip-embedded passport on Monday, April 28, at a ceremony held at the Passport Office in Accra. The event was led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
“From today, we roll out the chip-embedded passport, which means the Passport Office will no longer issue the old biometric passport,” Mr. Ablakwa announced.
As part of the launch, the Chief of Staff, Mr. Julius Debrah, received his chip-embedded passport. In his remarks, Mr. Debrah highlighted the importance of innovation in governance, describing the introduction of the new passport as a commendable initiative to address national challenges.
Mr. Ablakwa clarified that the introduction of the chip-embedded passport does not render the existing biometric passport obsolete. In line with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) guidelines, the biometric passport remains valid until 2030.
“This does not mean that those currently using the biometric passport are holding an invalid document. The ICAO allows its use until 2030,” he emphasized.
The Minister also noted improvements in passport processing times. Applicants for the chip-embedded passport can expect to receive their documents within 15 working days, while expedited applications will be processed within five working days.
Importantly, Mr. Ablakwa announced that applicants will not incur additional fees for passport delivery. “We have eliminated delivery charges from the fee structure. Applicants should not pay any extra fees for delivery,” he said.
In preparation for the rollout, President John Dramani Mahama and former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo had already received their chip-embedded passports, and efforts were underway to ensure former President John Agyekum Kufuor received his by the end of the day.
Mr. Ablakwa also used the occasion to warn the public against engaging with unauthorized intermediaries, commonly referred to as ‘goro boys.’ He encouraged such individuals to consider formal employment by joining the Ministry’s delivery team.
Speaking at the event, the Director of the Passport Office, Mr. Akwasi Asante, described the rollout as a reflection of the government’s dedication to technological advancement, improved security, and service efficiency.
He further noted that the chip-embedded passport would enhance international recognition and acceptance of Ghanaian passports.
Mr. Asante concluded by thanking all stakeholders who contributed to the successful development and implementation of the new passport system.
