Government Pledges to Safeguard University Autonomy

Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has assured that the Mahama-led administration will steadfastly champion academic freedom and institutional autonomy within public universities. Speaking at the 58th Special Congregation of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), she underscored the government’s commitment to empowering university councils and management to discharge their statutory responsibilities without undue political interference.

-Academic Freedom: Professor Opoku-Agyemang emphasized the government’s dedication to academic freedom, allowing institutions to flourish unencumbered by unnecessary external influences.

– Institutional Autonomy: The Vice President assured that the government will limit intervention to ensuring compliance with policies, regulations, and standards, striking a balance between oversight and autonomy.

– New Policy Initiatives: She unveiled key policy highlights aimed at reshaping Ghana’s higher education landscape, including the upcoming launch of the “No Fees Stress Policy” to reduce financial pressure on first-year students.

The Vice President’s assurance comes as a renewed emphasis on cultivating an environment that fosters intellectual curiosity, innovation, and academic excellence. The government’s commitment to accessible, research-driven, and autonomous tertiary education in Ghana was reaffirmed by Professor Opoku-Agyemang, who also highlighted the importance of empowering university councils and management to perform their statutory duties.

The pledge was made during the 58th Special Congregation of KNUST, where the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, welcomed Vice President Opoku-Agyemang with warm words and blessings, expressing delight at her appearance after a period of medical absence.
