Government Engages Power Sector Leaders on Sustainable Energy Solutions

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has revealed that he and Energy Minister Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor recently convened a candid and constructive dialogue with prominent figures in Ghana’s energy sector to outline a sustainable future.

The gathering brought together leaders from various organisations, including the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), Volta River Authority (VRA), the Energy Commission, GRIDCo, and other relevant bodies.

Key discussions centred around the pressing need for viable, long-term solutions to the sector’s ongoing difficulties. These challenges encompass legacy debts, issues related to tariffs, operational inefficiencies, and costly power purchase agreements.

While recognising the financial pressures facing the sector, Dr. Forson stressed that the primary objective of the meeting was to pinpoint actionable measures to ensure both stability and sustainability.

“Our conversation focused on the immediate necessity for effective and sustainable solutions to reinforce Ghana’s power sector,” he remarked.

The meeting concluded with a robust and unified commitment from all stakeholders to back the ongoing reforms encapsulated in the Energy Sector Recovery Programme (ESRP). This commitment includes prioritising sustainable financial strategies and policy interventions designed to enhance operational efficiency and provide reliable, affordable electricity to Ghanaians.

Dr. Forson noted that the aim is not only to stabilise the power sector but also to protect the wider economy from the adverse effects of inefficiencies in electricity provision.
