Ghana to Build Second Gas Processing Facility to Enhance Energy Capacity

The Government of Ghana, through the Ghana National Gas Company Limited, is preparing to embark on the construction of a second gas processing facility, referred to as GPP2.

This development was revealed by the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, during the Africa Energy Forum held in conjunction with the 2025 Offshore Technology Conference (OTC).

This pivotal announcement underscores the commitment of His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama’s administration to achieving energy independence for Ghana and positioning the nation as a significant player in the energy landscape of sub-Saharan Africa.

The existing Ghana Gas Processing Plant (GPP1) was initiated, built, and launched under the leadership of the late H.E. John Evans Atta Mills and John Dramani Mahama.

While there was an established plan for the development of the second plant, the previous administration did not prioritize the construction of this essential infrastructure. Upon taking office, H.E. President John Dramani Mahama pledged to advance the GPP2 project.

The establishment of GPP2 is expected to generate employment opportunities for young, skilled graduates and enhance Ghana’s energy self-sufficiency. More critically, it will stimulate economic growth by ensuring a steady supply of affordable and reliable electricity for industrial use, residential consumption, and exports to neighboring nations.
