Ghana Reports Two Additional Mpox Cases, Total Rises to Four

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed two new cases of Mpox, increasing the total number of infections in the country to four.

The newly identified cases were found in the Greater Accra and Western Regions, as detailed in a press release issued on Sunday, May 18, 2025. The statement, signed by Prof. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, Acting Director General of the GHS, clarified that these latest cases are not epidemiologically linked to the previous two infections reported earlier this month.

In response, the respective Regional Health Directorates have initiated contact tracing and implemented other public health measures to prevent further spread of the virus.

The GHS reminded the public that Mpox, a viral illness, is transmitted through close contact with infected individuals, animals, or contaminated materials. “Common symptoms include rash, fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, low energy, and swollen lymph nodes,” the statement highlighted.

Health officials have urged citizens to maintain regular hand hygiene, avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms, and report any suspected cases to the nearest health facility without delay.

The Ministry of Health and the GHS have also called on media outlets to aid in public education by sharing accurate information regarding Mpox prevention. “The Government of Ghana remains dedicated to safeguarding public health. Drawing on our experience in managing similar outbreaks, we will continue to implement effective measures to protect the health and well-being of all residents,” the statement affirmed.

This latest update follows a previous announcement on May 15, which confirmed Ghana’s first two cases of Mpox. Health authorities have reassured the public of their preparedness to manage the outbreak, utilising lessons learned from past responses to infectious diseases.
