GHANA GOVERNMENT TAKES SWIFT ACTION AGAINST CORRUPTION AT WASHINGTON DC EMBASSY

The Ghanaian government has taken drastic measures to address corruption allegations at the country’s embassy in Washington DC. Following a special audit team’s damning findings, the government has implemented several actions to rectify the situation.

Dismissal and Recalls

– Mr. Fred Kwarteng, a locally recruited staff member in the embassy’s IT department, has been dismissed for creating an unauthorized link on the embassy’s website, diverting visa and passport applicants to his company, Ghana Travel Consultants (GTC), where he charged extra fees without approval.

– All Ministry of Foreign Affairs staff posted to the Washington embassy have been recalled home with immediate effect.

– All locally recruited staff at the embassy have been suspended.

Investigations and Audits

– The case has been reported to the Attorney-General for possible prosecution and retrieval of funds obtained through fraudulent schemes.

– The Auditor-General has been invited to conduct a forensic examination of all transactions to determine the total cost of the elaborate fraudulent scheme.

Embassy Restructuring

– The embassy’s IT department has been dissolved.

– The Ghanaian embassy in Washington DC will be closed for a few days to finalize the ongoing restructuring and systems overhaul.

Government’s Stance on Corruption

The government has assured the public that it will continue to demonstrate zero tolerance for corruption, naked conflict of interest, and blatant abuse of office. The actions taken are part of a broader effort to restore integrity and transparency in government institutions.

The government regrets any inconvenience these measures may cause visa and passport applicants and assures them that the restructuring is aimed at improving services and preventing similar incidents in the future.
