The boxing community is in mourning following the death of former National and Africa middleweight champion Umar Sanda, also known as Moro Sanda. He passed away on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, in Bolgatanga, his hometown, and was buried on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, according to Islamic traditions.
Umar Sanda, 67, was a renowned boxing coach and promoter who spent years contributing to the development of the sport in Ghana. In his later years, he expressed concerns about the declining standards of boxing in the country, particularly in the Northern region, where he lamented the lack of support and enthusiasm among young boxers.
The boxing fraternity has paid tribute to Sanda, describing him as a dedicated and passionate advocate for the sport. “His contributions to Ghanaian boxing will never be forgotten,” said a colleague. “He was a true champion, both in and out of the ring.”
Sanda’s achievements as a boxer include winning national and African titles, and his legacy continues to inspire many young athletes. His passing leaves a void in the boxing community, and his family has received condolences from fans and fellow boxers.
