The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has issued a critical warning to the public regarding the sale and consumption of two alcoholic beverages: Kings Orange Flavoured Liqueur and Jupiter 1990. Both products have been found to contain cannabis extracts and are classified as unsafe for human consumption.
The FDA has highlighted that these beverages are unregistered and are being illicitly produced by a facility known as Famude Catering Services, located in the Ashanti Region. The consumption of these drinks poses significant health risks, including the potential for long-term damage to vital organs.
In a statement released on Sunday, May 18, the FDA urged consumers to refrain from consuming these products altogether, cautioning that their use could result in irreversible harm to organs such as the liver and kidneys, as well as other serious health issues.
The Authority has also instructed retailers and wholesalers to cease the sale of these products immediately and to return any remaining stock to the nearest FDA office. They stressed that the sale of unapproved and potentially hazardous items is a grave violation of national food and drug regulations.
Kings Orange Flavoured Liqueur was previously registered in 2022 but was withdrawn from the market after the FDA discovered illegal substances during routine testing in 2023. The company’s licence was revoked, and its operations were terminated.
However, recent intelligence received in April 2025 indicated that these products had re-emerged in locations such as Koforidua. A raid conducted at an illegal facility in Jachie Abidjan Nkwanta uncovered parcels of marijuana, packaging materials, and bottles of the liqueur. Subsequent laboratory analyses confirmed the presence of cannabis extracts in both beverages.
The FDA has since transferred the seized items to the police and the Narcotics Control Commission for further investigation and potential legal action.
The Authority remains vigilant and committed to monitoring the market closely to prevent the distribution of unapproved or unsafe products, urging the public to report any information regarding the sale or distribution of these two drinks.
