EC Sets Date for Rerun of Council of State Elections in North East and Ashanti Regions

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has announced that the rerun of the Council of State elections for the North East and Ashanti regions is scheduled for Monday, February 17, 2025. This decision comes in response to electoral irregularities that necessitated a new election. The EC has coordinated with the Ghana Police Service and the National Election Security Taskforce to implement enhanced security measures for the upcoming election.

Background of the Rerun

The need for a rerun in the North East Region arose from a tie between the two leading candidates, each receiving six votes. In the Ashanti Region, the election was marred by disruptions caused by thugs, which halted the voting process.

Security Measures in Place

To prevent similar disruptions during the rerun, the EC has taken proactive measures by engaging the National Election Security Taskforce to ensure adequate security at all polling stations.

Statements from the EC

Samuel Tettey, the Deputy Chairman of Operations for the EC, highlighted the importance of conducting a peaceful electoral process and reassured the public that measures are being implemented to facilitate a smooth rerun. The EC is dedicated to maintaining the integrity of the electoral process and ensuring that all eligible voters can participate without fear of violence or intimidation.

Conclusion

As the rerun date approaches, stakeholders are encouraged to remain vigilant and cooperate with security personnel to ensure a successful election. The EC’s commitment to addressing the issues from the previous elections underscores its dedication to upholding democratic principles and the rule of law in Ghana.
