Dr. Fred AkaPhari Awaah, a dedicated grassroots member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and former Secretary and Spokesperson of the party’s Sports Manifesto Committee, has been appointed as the Board Chairman of the National Sports Authority (NSA).
The appointment forms part of the new administration’s broader agenda to revitalize sports development in Ghana. Dr. Awaah brings to the role extensive experience in grassroots political engagement and sustained advocacy for lesser-funded sporting disciplines.
In his first remarks following the appointment, Dr. Awaah pledged to spearhead a transformation of Ghanaian sports into a strategic national asset capable of generating substantial revenue for the state.
“I am committed to turning sports into a viable economic avenue that benefits the nation,” Dr. Awaah stated. “We will develop modern infrastructure, attract private-sector investments, and position Ghanaian sports as a revenue-generating powerhouse.”
He further emphasized his commitment to youth development, noting that the identification and nurturing of young talent would be a central pillar of his leadership.
“Our youth are the future of Ghanaian sports. We will identify, nurture, and develop these talents to represent Ghana at both national and international levels, ensuring that no potential goes untapped,” he added.
Dr. Awaah’s track record reflects a deep passion for sports development. As a committed supporter of the NDC, he has consistently supported grassroots party activities through in-kind contributions. Beyond partisan politics, he has made significant personal investments aimed at transforming some of Ghana’s least-financed sporting disciplines. His efforts include proposing innovative revenue-generation ideas and providing encouragement and support to under-resourced sports sectors that have historically received limited attention.
His leadership role on the NDC Sports Manifesto Committee further highlights his experience in policy formulation and strategic planning for holistic sports development.
