Tensions flared on Wednesday, July 30, during a demolition exercise at Spintex in Accra, as JoyNews reporter Carlos Carlony was detained by National Security operatives under unclear circumstances.
According to a video footage, the situation escalated when an armed military officer allegedly assaulted a civilian who was engaged in conversation with the journalist. The officer reportedly intervened to stop Carlony from filming or reporting on the exercise.
Also an eye witness who was speaking to this reporter was severely beaten by the said Military personnel who were probably uncomfortable with him giving vivid account of the demolition to the media.
Carlony’s mobile phone was confiscated, and he was taken into custody shortly after the incident.
As of the time of filing this report, details surrounding his arrest and the motives behind the confrontation remain murky.
The incident has reignited public concern about press freedom and the treatment of journalists covering sensitive state operations. Advocacy groups and media rights organisations are calling for an immediate investigation and accountability from the security agencies involved.
