Early Life and Education
Born on October 7, 1963, in Tamale, Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s early education began at Sakasaka Primary School and continued at Tamale Secondary School (1975–1982). His academic brilliance took him abroad, where he earned a series of distinguished qualifications in economics from some of the world’s leading institutions:

Scholarships and Awards
Dr. Bawumia’s academic excellence earned him numerous honours, including the Sir Alan Peacock Prize for Best Economics Student (1986). During his doctoral studies, he received multiple graduate fellowships, later winning the Young Researcher Award from Baylor University (1999). In recognition of his contributions to banking and finance, he was inducted as a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers in 2007.

Professional and Central Banking Career
Before entering frontline politics, Dr. Bawumia built an illustrious career as an economist and banker. He worked as a lecturer in London and an economist at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington, D.C. From 1996 to 2000, he served as Assistant Professor of Economics at Baylor University, USA.

In 2000, he returned to Ghana and joined the Bank of Ghana, rising through the ranks from Senior Economist to Deputy Governor (appointed in 2006). At the central bank, he played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Monetary Policy Committee, and led technical teams in negotiations with the IMF, World Bank, and the Paris Club, contributing significantly to Ghana’s macroeconomic stability.

Political Career
Dr. Bawumia’s transition into politics began when he was selected as running mate to Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in 2008, a partnership that continued through the 2012 and 2016 elections. Following the NPP’s victory in 2016, he became Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, serving two consecutive terms.

Known as “The Digital Man”, Dr. Bawumia has been the driving force behind Ghana’s digital transformation, championing more than 40 major policy initiatives that modernized public service delivery and improved financial inclusion. He also gained national recognition as the chief witness for the NPP during the 2012 presidential election petition at the Supreme Court.

In 2024, Dr. Bawumia became the Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). The narrative envisions his continued leadership journey—projecting his re-election as flagbearer on January 31, 2026, and his eventual ascension to the Presidency of Ghana on January 7, 2029.
