Benjamin Asare, the goalkeeper for the Black Stars and Accra Hearts of Oak, has received a Hyundai Elantra from businessman and philanthropist Alhaji Seidu Agongo, following the widespread circulation of a video that showcased the national player using public transport.
The footage, which emerged last month and quickly gained traction on social media, depicted the 32-year-old goalkeeper riding in a public minibus—known locally as a ‘trotro’—with only a backpack slung over his shoulder.
Alhaji Agongo, the founder of the now-defunct Heritage Bank, was inspired by Asare’s display of humility and patriotism, prompting him to make this generous gesture. The handover ceremony took place on Wednesday morning in Accra.
Asare, visibly moved by the gesture, shared his heartfelt appreciation: “This is beyond my wildest dreams. I take the trotro not because I want sympathy, but because I believe in living simply. Mr. Agongo’s kindness has overwhelmed me, and I promise to honor this gift by continuing to give my best for Ghana.”
The Hearts of Oak captain has garnered admiration not only for his on-field performances but also for his charitable spirit off the pitch. Club sources revealed that Asare had generously shared nearly half of his GH¢170,000 bonus from national team duties with his teammates, including members of the women’s team.
Accra Hearts of Oak paid tribute to him on Facebook, celebrating his leadership and dedication: “From guarding the goalposts to earning the keys. For club. For country. For the badge.”
Asare, who made his debut for the Black Stars in 2024, has solidified his position in the national squad and is anticipated to participate in Ghana’s upcoming international matches.
