Ben Nunoo Mensah’s Future at GOC Hangs in the Balance

As the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) gears up for its upcoming elections, speculation is rife about whether Ben Nunoo Mensah will seek a fourth term as President. Nunoo Mensah has been instrumental in driving Ghanaian sports administration since 2010, serving as both GOC Treasurer and President.

Under his leadership, the GOC has faced significant financial accountability challenges, which have been a subject of discussion at every General Assembly. Despite these challenges, Nunoo Mensah has been credited with transforming the Ghana Weightlifting Federation and leading the national team to win several medals at international competitions.

However, his tenure has also been marked by increased division amongst leadership within the GOC boards, control of the Secretariat, and function of the Sub-committees. This has raised concerns about whether his continuity will bring stability and sustained progress.

As the GOC elections approach, the sports fraternity is eagerly waiting to see if Nunoo Mensah will declare his candidacy for a fourth term. The outcome of this election will shape the direction of Ghana’s Olympic movement for years to come, particularly in the lead-up to the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Will Nunoo Mensah seek re-election, or will he pave the way for new leadership? Only time will tell.
