Agrochemical Spill Contaminates Tordze River; Authorities Issue Caution

A significant environmental incident has occurred due to the spillage of agrochemicals into the Tordze River, a crucial tributary of the Volta River, following an accident involving a truck carrying the chemicals on Tuesday, February 18, 2025. The spill, which happened near Tove in the Republic of Togo, has raised serious concerns regarding water safety in the Volta region, especially for communities that depend on the river for drinking, fishing, irrigation, and other daily activities.

In a press release dated Wednesday, February 19, 2025, the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC) advised individuals and communities that rely on the river to refrain from using its water until a thorough assessment confirms its safety. The statement, signed by Mr. Augustus Awity, Chief Director of the Regional Coordinating Directorate at VRCC, stressed the importance of evaluating the extent of contamination in the Tordze River and adjacent water bodies before permitting any human activity.

The affected regions include the Agortime-Ziope District and other downstream communities. As a precautionary measure, the VRCC has instructed all Municipal and District Assemblies in the impacted areas to provide alternative water sources until the situation is resolved.

“We kindly request your assistance in disseminating this notice,” the statement urged, underscoring the need for community awareness.

Authorities are actively investigating the incident and monitoring water quality. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official communications as the situation develops.Bookmark message
