President John Dramani Mahama will today, Monday, November 17, 2025, officially swear in Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as Chief Justice, following Parliament’s recent approval of his nomination.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie was nominated by President Mahama on September 23, 2025, with the President highlighting his “wealth of experience and long service on the Bench,” which spans the High Court, Court of Appeal, and the Supreme Court.
He has served as Acting Chief Justice since April 22, 2025, after the suspension and subsequent dismissal of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
During his appearance before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on November 10, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie pledged an open-door, bipartisan leadership style and reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening judicial independence and expanding access to justice.
Parliament approved his appointment on November 13 by a vote of 163 to 69, clearing the way for today’s swearing-in ceremony.
