A new poll by Global InfoAnalytics shows that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has taken the lead in the Akan-dominated regions ahead of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026.
The poll, which was shared by the Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, Mr. Mussa Dankwah on his Facebook page on Sunday, 5th October, 2025, reveals that Dr. Bawumia has secured 39% of the delegates’ support in the Akan regions.
His closest competitor, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, gained 20% of the votes in the same areas. The poll also indicates that 30% of the delegates in these regions remain undecided.
The Akan-dominated regions covered in the poll include Ashanti, Eastern, Bono, Bono East, Ahafo, Central, Western, and Western North. These areas are considered crucial in the NPP’s flagbearer contest because they account for a significant number of delegates.
The report highlights that Dr. Bawumia’s strong showing in these regions gives him a competitive edge in the upcoming primaries. However, analysts believe the 30% undecided delegates could still change the dynamics of the race if Kennedy Agyapong manages to win their support.
Mr. Dankwah also provided an overview of the ethnic distribution of the NPP delegates nationwide. According to the data, Akans make up 58% of the delegates, while Mole-Dagbani represent 14%, Ewes 9%, Ga-Adangme 6%, Guans 5%, Gruma 1%, and others 7%.
Political observers say the Akan regions will play a decisive role in determining the party’s next flagbearer, and both candidates are expected to intensify their campaigns there.
The NPP primaries are expected to be highly competitive as both Dr. Bawumia and Kennedy Agyapong battle to win the support of delegates across the country.
