Kennedy Agyapong and the Illusion of Loyalty: The Politics of Self-Interest

In Ghana’s political space, loyalty has too often become a tradable asset, and politics a vehicle for personal gain, and rarely seen as a resource for social development. Their conscience does not govern their thoughts. Unlike those who live without pretense, we respond swiftly and decisively to hypocrisy and deceit, finding satisfaction only when truth prevails. They are sycophants! For them, politics is not a calling to righteousness or a pursuit of collective prosperity, but merely a means of self-gratification.

Among members of the East Legon Executive Fun Club, Kennedy Agyapong is widely regarded as selfish and greedy, a man who craved nearly every government contract awarded during the NPP’s previous regime. He was known to take more than his fair share and, at times, allegedly inflicted harm on CEOs who refused to grant contracts to his wives and children.

Anyone in such a privileged position of personal gain should naturally be more supportive of the party that empowered him. Yet, Kennedy Agyapong often displays a cruel and vindictive disposition toward the very establishment that enabled his rise.

Let’s be frank: if you receive $300 million worth of government contracts and donate $3 million to the ruling party that awarded them, you’ve “done well” by basic standards of give-and-take. But there are others who contribute far more to the party without ever taking a single government contract.

According to some close to the situation, Mr Oheneba Agyepong is poised to use a benefactor’s financial support, likely that of his potential running mate, to finance his primaries, only to abandon her once his ambitions are served. Hon. Kennedy Agyapong may covet her wealth, but he clearly resents her influence and presence within his inner circle. He is unlikely to change, and any politician who enters into an alliance with him engages in nothing more than a futile and wasteful political maneuver.

For the more popularly strong he becomes, the more reckless he grows with ethics and restraint. It is deeply disappointing to see him allow himself to be dragged into the gutters by Abronye and the politics of insult and provocation, which abruptly halted the “Thank You Tour.”

Hon Kennedy Ohene Agyepong must be careful with his unethical actions. If he is not, they will destroy him, and in the process, drag down the party and, ultimately, all of us. It is no wonder, then, that his unethical conduct continues to amplify the growing chorus of criticism against him.

I can see a drama soon unfolding. As events continue to evolve, the political stage may yet again witness another performance of grandiosity. And that maybe between him and potential running mate, as the theatre of exaggeration worthy of the Battle of Tours.
