Huni-Valley Senior High School (Hunivass) has launched its 50th anniversary celebrations, marking five decades of secondary school education. The ceremony, held at the Coconut Grove Regency Hotel in Accra, drew attention to the school’s humble beginnings and its resilience.

Reflecting on the School’s History
Dr. Anthony Kwasi Aubynn, CEO of the Petroleum Hub Development Corporation and a former student, highlighted the school’s challenging start. “The school began in community members’ homes, including my father’s house, which was converted into a classroom,” he recalled. The school later transitioned to makeshift wooden structures, earning the nickname “Gyi-Etuo,” meaning “except the gun,” symbolizing the students’ determination.
Celebrations and Achievements
The anniversary celebrations, scheduled from November 24-30, aim to inspire renewed energy and creativity. Dr. Aubynn emphasized the importance of strategic planning for the school’s future. Headmaster Daniel Aidoo highlighted the school’s achievements, including its best results in 2023, with 35 students scoring aggregate six to nine. A student scored eight As and secured a sponsorship to study at the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT).

Challenges and Appeal for Support
Despite its successes, the school faces infrastructure challenges, including dilapidated kitchens, classrooms, and inadequate accommodation facilities. Aidoo appealed to stakeholders and corporate bodies for support to address these issues and facilitate the school’s transition to the single-track system. The school has acquired new land and plans to build new accommodations and classrooms.
Anniversary Cloth and Shirts
The president of the Old Students Association, Kofi Arhin, unveiled the school’s anniversary cloth and shirts, carefully designed to reflect the school’s culture, heritage, and forward movement.
