Eligible voters in Ablekuma North head to the polls today, Friday, July 11, 2025, for a crucial parliamentary rerun across 19 polling stations in the constituency.
The rerun seeks to resolve a protracted electoral dispute and restore parliamentary representation to a constituency that has remained without an MP since the December 2024 general elections.
Controversy over the initial parliamentary results erupted following the December 7 vote, with disputes arising in 62 polling stations. Tensions between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) centered on the authenticity of pink sheets and alleged irregularities in the collation process.
The Electoral Commission (EC) went on to compile results from 59 of the disputed polling stations but left three unresolved, prompting legal challenges. In January 2025, the High Court ordered the EC to complete the collation and declare the final results.
However, citing missing endorsements and procedural irregularities in 19 polling stations, the EC announced a rerun to safeguard the integrity and transparency of the electoral process.
The decision sparked controversy. The NPP, insisting its candidate Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie had won the December vote by a margin of 414 votes, vehemently opposed the rerun and sought a court injunction to stop it. The effort failed when the court dismissed the application on July 9, describing it as “unmeritorious.”
Despite the party’s official boycott, Akua Afriyie broke ranks and confirmed her participation in the rerun. “I am contesting. We are fully prepared. We are going for this contest,” she declared in a press briefing on July 10.
Her decision received backing from some NPP constituency executives, as well as sitting and former NPP MPs, who actively campaigned on her behalf in the lead-up to today’s vote.
Meanwhile, the NDC has stood firm, maintaining that its candidate, Ewurabena Aubynn, was the rightful winner in December. Confident of victory, the party has led an intensive campaign across the constituency, urging supporters to turn out in large numbers.
As polls open, all eyes are on Ablekuma North in what promises to be a defining moment in the constituency’s political future.
