Misleading Reports on Ga Mantse Title Prompt Clarification from Royal Office

The Office of the Ga Mantse, His Royal Majesty King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, has issued a press statement to address and refute false reports circulating on social media regarding a recent Court of Appeal judgment. These reports inaccurately claim that the Court has declared Nii Adama Latse II as the Ga Mantse, a statement the royal office deems “false, misleading, and legally unfounded.”

According to the press release, legal experts have clarified that under Ghanaian law, matters concerning chieftaincy fall under the jurisdiction of the Judicial Committees of Traditional Councils, as well as the Regional and National Houses of Chiefs. The Court of Appeal’s ruling, which affirmed a previous High Court order, did not grant any declaration regarding the Ga Mantse title, but rather mandated the restoration of Nii Adama Latse II’s name in the National Register of Chiefs.

“The Court merely affirmed the High Court’s earlier order of mandamus compelling the National House of Chiefs to restore the name into the National Register of Chiefs within 14 days,” the statement read. “It is important to emphasize that the Court cannot rule on matters over which it has no jurisdiction.”

The press release also highlighted an ongoing chieftaincy dispute involving Nii Adama Latse II and King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, currently pending before the Judicial Committee of the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs. This dispute was initiated by Nii Adama Latse II against King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II and others, with the case number GARHC/P2/2019.

In 2020, Nii Adama Latse II sought an interlocutory injunction to prevent King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II from performing the functions of Ga Mantse, but this application was dismissed. The Judicial Committee directed that King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II continue to exercise his duties as Ga Mantse pending the final determination of the case.

The royal office reiterated that the rightful occupant of the Ga Mantse Stool can only be determined by the Judicial Committee of the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs, and until that decision is made, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II remains the legitimate and recognized Ga Mantse.

In light of the misinformation, the Office of the Ga Mantse has urged the public and media to disregard misleading interpretations and remain calm, emphasizing the importance of accurate reporting in the community.

The statement concluded with a call for unity among the GaDangme citizens and residents of the Ga State, as they navigate this ongoing dispute.
