An aspiring Organizing Secretary of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Mustapha Suleimana, has called for greater equity and welfare for journalists within the organization. Speaking during a visit to the Ghanaian Times, Mr. Suleimana expressed concern that despite the association generating GH¢42,000 annually from membership dues, only a small fraction of members benefit from these funds.
He pledged to prioritize journalists’ welfare if elected into office and suggested that the GJA establish a standing committee comprising lawyers, police, doctors, and psychologists to protect journalists’ rights and make it costly for individuals or organizations to attack them. “It must be an expensive enterprise to attack journalists,” he stated.
Mr. Suleimana made a passionate appeal to staff of the New Times Corporation to vote for him on June 30th and to not only vote for him but also campaign actively for him. “When the day comes, you ought to make your voice loud,” he urged.
He assured that if voted into power, the welfare of journalists would be his utmost concern, and he would work tirelessly to ensure that the GJA becomes a more effective and beneficial organization for its members.
