Health Minister Urges Independent Mediation to End Nurses’ Strike

The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has called for the immediate formation of an independent mediation body to resolve the ongoing standoff between the government and striking nurses and midwives. The nationwide industrial action, now in its fourth day, has left many hospitals overwhelmed and patients stranded.

Background

Thousands of nurses and midwives have withdrawn their services in protest over delays in implementing their agreed Conditions of Service. Mr. Akandoh expressed grave concern over the impact of the strike on public health and stressed the urgency of reaching a consensus.

Minister’s Plea

The Minister emphasized the need for cooperation rather than confrontation, appealing to both sides to lower tensions and engage in frank discussions. “Let’s massage our egos, let’s put our emotions aside. We have Ghanaians to protect. We have Ghanaians to save their lives. We have an economy to run,” he said.

Nurses’ Association Response

However, the Registered Nurses and Midwives Association remains firm in its demands, insisting that the strike will only be called off once the government begins implementing the agreed Conditions of Service. The Association’s General Secretary, Dr. David Tenkorang, emphasized the urgency of the situation and the sacrifices made by healthcare workers, calling for prompt action to address their concerns.
