Kwesi Pratt Jnr: We Will Confront Mahama Directly If He Seeks a Third Term

Kwesi Pratt Jnr, the managing director of Insight Newspaper, has made a firm declaration that former President John Dramani Mahama will face significant opposition should he attempt to run for a third term in office.

Justin Frimpong Kodua of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has suggested that the recent move to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkornoo is tied to a supposed scheme by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to facilitate Mahama’s bid for a third presidential term. He pointed out that the discussion centers around Article 66(2) of the Constitution.

Kodua alleged that certain individuals are planning to reinterpret Article 66(2) to suggest that the two-term limit applies only to consecutive terms. In response, Kwesi Pratt emphasized that there would be formidable resistance if Mahama were to pursue a third term. However, he dismissed the claims, asserting that there is no evidence to suggest that Mahama is actually considering such a move.

In an interview on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo, Pratt stated, “As I sit here, it is not only about President John Dramani Mahama. Any president who attempts to amend the constitution to extend their tenure beyond two terms will face strong opposition. It is not right, so if Mahama ever attempts a third term, we will fight him squarely.”

He further questioned the validity of the allegations, saying, “However, there is no indication that a constitutional review is being carried out for this purpose. What kind of issue is this? When it comes to constitutional amendments, Nana Addo also formed a committee to review the constitution; does that mean he wanted a third term? Prof. Mills did the same; does it mean he also sought a third term?”

In related news, award-winning investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has weighed in on the accusations against Mahama regarding a potential third-term ambition. He expressed his belief that Mahama is too principled to even consider such a possibility. In a brief post on his social media account on X, he remarked, “I think John Mahama is too decent to contemplate a third term.”
