Joseph Ade Coker Denounces NPP’s Protest Against Chief Justice Suspension as ‘Immature’ and Ineffective

Joseph Ade Coker, the former Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has lambasted the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for their recent protest against the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, labeling it an “immature” political maneuver.

During an appearance on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Tuesday, May 6, Coker defended the government’s stance, asserting that all actions taken were in accordance with legal procedures and that the NDC remains impervious to the opposition’s efforts. “The government is acting appropriately, and all due processes are being observed. The petitions they submitted were immature, as nothing will deter President Mahama or the NDC from upholding the constitutional mandates of this nation,” Coker stated. He underscored that the suspension was a lawful action and reaffirmed President John Dramani Mahama’s dedication to maintaining constitutional integrity.

The protest, which took place on May 5, was spearheaded by a coalition of opposition parties, primarily the NPP, with demonstrators demanding the annulment of the Chief Justice’s suspension. Petitions were delivered to the Presidency, Parliament, and the Judiciary, urging President Mahama to reconsider Torkornoo’s reinstatement. Justice Torkornoo was suspended on April 22, 2025, following the emergence of a prima facie case against her, prompted by complaints from private citizen Daniel Ofori, police officer Ayamga Akolgo, and the civil society organization Shining Stars of Ghana.

In accordance with Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution, a five-member committee has been established to investigate the allegations surrounding her suspension.
