Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah has offered reassurance to members of the Minority who recently staged a protest advocating for the reinstatement of suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo. He emphasized that President John Dramani Mahama is dedicated to maintaining the rule of law and is not influenced by personal vendettas.
In a Facebook update shared on May 6, 2025, Dr. Omane Boamah addressed the concerns expressed by the demonstrators, affirming that President Mahama will respond based on the findings and recommendations of the committee assigned to investigate the petition against the Chief Justice. “Under President John Dramani Mahama, you can be assured the rule of law will be upheld. President Mahama is not mean-spirited! He’ll uphold the recommendations of the committee established to look into the petition,” the Defence Minister stated.
Additionally, Dr. Boamah acknowledged Presidential Aide Stan Xoese Dogbe, who received the Minority’s petition on the President’s behalf. He commended Dogbe for his calm demeanor during the interaction and noted that the protest illustrated the NPP Minority’s commitment to supporting one of their own.
The Defence Minister’s comments come at a time of increased political tension surrounding Chief Justice Torkonoo’s suspension, a decision that has ignited discussions across the political landscape. The Minority, primarily composed of NPP MPs, argues that the suspension was driven by political motives and is calling for her immediate reinstatement.
While President Mahama has not publicly addressed the situation, the Defence Minister’s statements suggest that the administration is prepared to allow the proper legal processes to unfold.
