Burkina Faso’s President, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has confirmed the arrest of an individual believed to be the orchestrator of a recent attempted coup.
In a statement released by the presidency, officials indicated that the suspect was detained following a coordinated security operation involving national intelligence and the armed forces. Authorities consider this arrest a significant advancement in the effort to maintain stability within the nation. “This action demonstrates our government’s unwavering commitment to defending the integrity of the nation and protecting our democratic institutions,” government spokesperson Jean-Emmanuel Ouédraogo stated during a press briefing on Wednesday. “Anyone who attempts to undermine peace and unity will face the full force of the law.”
While the identity of the suspect has not yet been publicly revealed, they are currently in custody and undergoing questioning. Initial investigations suggest that the coup plot may have involved collaboration with external entities, although specific details remain confidential for reasons of national security.
