Dennis Miracles Aboagye, the former Director of Communications for the 2024 Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia campaign team, has called on the government to declare a state of emergency in order to address the escalating issue of illegal mining, commonly referred to as Galamsey.
Stakeholders in the mining sector have raised alarms over the continued destruction of lands and the pollution of water bodies caused by illegal mining activities.
Speaking on Point Blank on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Monday, March 10, Aboagye urged the government to take bold and decisive action by declaring a state of emergency to combat the menace.
He emphasized the need for stronger measures, stating, “We want the NDC to declare a state of emergency because galamsey has escalated.
That is what they promised us two months ago. We burnt excavators, arrested illegal miners, and put them in jail, yet the president today says that wasn’t the right approach, but that is exactly what is happening now.”
Aboagye also pointed to previous statements made during the campaign, questioning the current government’s consistency.
“He said on a campaign platform that he didn’t understand why we were arresting people in the pits and that when he took office, he would release them. So why is he arresting them in the pits now?” he asked.
