The Electoral Commission (EC) is set for the rerun of the Council of State elections in the North East and Ashanti Regions on Monday, February 17.
The decision to rerun the election in the North East Region follows a tie between two candidates, each securing six votes. This deadlock necessitated a fresh election to determine the winner.
In the Ashanti Region, the rerun was prompted by unrest during the ballot counting process, which disrupted the election and left the counting incomplete. The chaotic scenes led to an unfinished process, compelling the EC to organize a new election to ensure the proper conclusion of the vote.In a statement issued on Wednesday, February 12, the EC assured the public that it has taken steps to ensure a smooth and secure election. The Commission confirmed that it has communicated with the Ghana Police Service and informed the National Election Security Taskforce, urging them to reinforce security at the election venues. These measures have been designed to prevent any further disruptions and ensure the integrity of the election process.
The EC’s commitment to a fair and peaceful election is central to its efforts to uphold the democratic process and maintain public confidence in the electoral system.
